Conference on Oil Exploration

The Oil Exploration at the Atlantic Margins Conference, jointly sponsored by the Universities of Coimbra and Lisbon, was held in Lisbon between September 29th and October 1st at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

The Conference brought to Lisbon more than two hundred international experts on technical and scientific areas related to research and oil exploration. Most of the participants were oil industry professionals, academic scholars from universities and Government Agency officials from Europe, North America, South America and Africa, locations with oil in their Atlantic margins.

This Conference followed the one held in Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada) in 2008 and was part of a strategy to contribute for a better understanding and development of exploration areas in the Atlantic margins, with potential of oil resources, as identified in some areas (eg. Brazil and Angola) and also other unexplored areas (Portugal, Ireland and Nova Scotia, for example). The presence and sponsorship of major oil companies like Petrobras, Statoil, GALP Energia and Partex, highlighted the importance and interest of this topic, and contributed to the high level of technical and scientific presentations.

The Opening Session took place on Wednesday, September 29, between 09:00 and 10:00 in Auditorium 2 of the Gulbenkian Foundation with the presence and participation of a representative of the Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Development, GALP Energia (Mr. Manuel Ferreira de Oliveira), Partex Oil & Gas (Dr. António Costa e Silva), Petrobras (Dr. F. Nepomuceno) and Statoil Angola (Dr. Bjorn Rasmussen).
